Planning Ahead: Pre-Arranging a Direct Cremation
More families are choosing to plan direct cremation in advance — not because something is wrong, but because it removes the burden from loved ones and locks in today's prices.
Why plan ahead?
When someone dies, families often have to make expensive decisions under emotional pressure and tight time constraints. Planning ahead means:
- Your wishes are documented — no guessing or family disagreements
- Costs are agreed upfront — funeral prices have risen significantly year on year
- Less stress for your family — the practical arrangements are already handled
- You can compare calmly — take your time to find the right provider and price
Pre-paid plans vs. planning ahead
There are two main approaches:
1. Planning (without paying)
You research providers, decide what you want, and document your wishes. You don't pay anything upfront — your family knows exactly what to arrange when the time comes. This is free and takes an afternoon.
2. Pre-paid funeral plans
You pay now (lump sum or monthly instalments) to lock in today's price. The provider guarantees to carry out the cremation at no additional cost, whenever it's needed.
Important: Since July 2022, all pre-paid funeral plan providers must be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Only use FCA-regulated providers for pre-paid plans — this protects your money if the provider goes bust.
What to consider when comparing
- Total price — not just the headline figure. Ask what's included and what costs extra.
- FCA regulation — essential for pre-paid plans. Check the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk.
- What happens to your money — is it held in a trust fund or insurance-backed?
- Cancellation terms — can you get a refund if you change your mind?
- Transfer policy — can the plan be transferred if you move?
- Inflation protection — does the plan guarantee to cover future price rises?
How much does direct cremation cost in 2026?
