Cookie Policy

This policy explains what cookies CremationCompare uses, why we use them, and how you can control them. For full details on how we handle personal data, please see our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They help the site function correctly and allow us to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.

Essential cookies

The main website does not currently need an essential cookie to display its pages. Your analytics choice is saved in browser storage so that we can remember it. This preference is not used to track you across websites.

Basic aggregate analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics solely to produce aggregate statistics about how this website is used so that we can improve it. It is enabled by default under the statistical purposes exception in PECR, and you can object at any time with the controls below.

Vercel Web Analytics does not set cookies or track a visitor across different websites or days. Vercel derives a daily visitor hash from request information, discards the visitor session after 24 hours, and shows us aggregate information such as page views, referrers, coarse location, device type and browser. See Vercel's Web Analytics privacy information.

Before Vercel page data leaves the browser, we remove any query string or page fragment from its page URL. If the incoming referrer contains either, we suppress the event because Vercel's browser hook does not provide a field through which we can safely replace that referrer.

Optional analytics

If you select “Allow optional analytics”, we load Google Analytics 4 (GA4), isolated Ahrefs page-view analytics and fixed Vercel interaction events to understand how visitors use the site. These are not enabled before that choice. GA4 may then set these cookies:

Cookie namePurposeDuration
_gaDistinguishes one browser from another using a randomly generated identifierUp to 2 years
_ga_[ID]Maintains session information for the GA4 propertyUp to 2 years

GA4 receives information such as pages viewed, approximate location, device details and referral source. Google says GA4 does not log or store individual IP addresses, but its browser identifiers are pseudonymous rather than anonymous. Event-level data is retained for 2 months and user-level data for 14 months in this site's GA4 property. Google may retain other aggregate reporting data for longer. See Google's official information about GA4 cookies and identification and data retention.

Ahrefs runs only after a fresh optional-analytics choice under our updated notice. Its script runs in an isolated frame without access to our page content, links or enquiry fields. We send only public canonical page URLs, with no query strings, fragments or referring URLs. We do not send names, email addresses, messages or postcode entries. Ahrefs receives normal browser request information, including the IP address and device details, to produce aggregate visitor statistics; Ahrefs says it does not retain raw IP addresses. It uses no analytics cookies. See Ahrefs' visitor analytics explanation.

This limited setup measures consented page views and daily visitor trends, not referral sources, link clicks or form submissions. Referrer information is intentionally omitted. Existing refusals are respected; an older optional-analytics choice does not by itself enable Ahrefs.

With permission, the browser sends fixed interaction events to Vercel and GA4: opening CremationCompare help, leaving for a provider website, and contact-form view, start, attempt, success or fixed error stages. These best-effort events are not message-delivery records. Their event-specific properties contain only the fixed page placement and type plus, where relevant, a provider's public slug—not contact details, messages, postcodes, form responses, request references, destination URLs or other free text. GA4 page context is sent separately with query strings and fragments removed. Ahrefs is not used for these journey events.

Cookie consent

GA4, Ahrefs page views and fixed Vercel interaction events are off by default. The analytics panel lets you allow that optional measurement, keep only basic aggregate analytics, or turn off all analytics. Refusing any analytics does not prevent you from using the comparison, guides or contact form.

Managing your analytics preferences

Use the controls below to change your choice on this device at any time. The page reloads so the new setting takes effect cleanly. Turning optional analytics off removes GA cookies that this site can access and removes the isolated Ahrefs frame. We save the choice and which analytics notice it covers in browser storage. If your browser prevents saving, we apply the choice to the current page and show a warning; you may need to choose again after reloading. Stored optional permissions are not reused while that storage is read-only.

You can also view, block, or delete cookies through your browser settings:

  • Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data

Please note that blocking all cookies may affect how some parts of the site work.

Google's browser-wide opt-out

You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits to any website by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, available for all major browsers.
